With social-distancing measures and a limit on group gatherings still in place, the club recently announced it was calling off the remainder of its spring season.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">The high school lacrosse season, also held in the spring, was officially canceled Tuesday as well by the Colorado High School Activities Association.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cThe last thing we really wanted to do was admit we were here, because the kids are excited. The parents are excited. This was what everybody was looking forward to, and it sort of felt final to make that decision,\u201d said Meredith Elwell, the club\u2019s co-director alongside Graham McMahon. \u201cThat doesn\u2019t mean we are not playing lacrosse until the fall or next spring. We will be prepared to offer opportunities as soon as we are allowed to take the field. Our work is far from done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">The spring is the busiest season for the Aspen Lacrosse Club, which averages about 250 athletes across the various age groups and was supposed to have gotten underway April 1. The highlight each year is the Aspen Shootout, held in May at Crown Mountain Park in El Jebel. That tournament is the club\u2019s lone significant fundraising event and its cancellation won\u2019t make things easy for the nonprofit.<\/p>\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col\">\n<div class=\"row at-donation at-donation-mobile p-0\">\n<div class=\"col-xl-4 p-2\">\n<div data-bg=\"url(https:\/\/cdn.aspentimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2020\/03\/AT-logo-white.png)\" class=\"p-0 mt-2 mb-2 h-75 text-center rocket-lazyload\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.aspentimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2020\/03\/AT-logo-white.png\" class=\"logo m-0 p-0 invisible\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-bg=\"url(https:\/\/cdn.aspentimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2020\/03\/at-banner-paypal.jpg)\" class=\"col-xl-8 p-3 text-center rocket-lazyload\">\n<h3 class=\"d-inline mr-3\">Support Local Journalism<\/h3>\n<p><button class=\"btn d-inline\" type=\"button\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/donate\/?utm_source=article&amp;utm_medium=website&amp;utm_campaign=donation&amp;utm_term=&amp;utm_content=mid-article\">Donate<\/a><\/button><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">From an operational standpoint, Elwell said the tournament breaks even, although the club does generate a good bit of revenue through various sponsorships.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cPeople were ready to play and ready to go,\u201d McMahon said. \u201cWe spend a good amount of time and money trying to get the season off the ground, because a lot of our work is done on the front end to get the season going. The money is definitely an issue. We are exploring other options, too, with some local businesses in the valley to maybe fundraise outside of the Aspen Shootout.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">As Elwell mentioned, the club is keeping its options open for summer play. June and July typically are quiet months for the club, which also has a rapidly growing fall season. But, with COVID-19 wreaking havoc, it continues to be a wait-and-see approach to getting back on the field.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cWe determined that it just wouldn\u2019t be our spring season. We really couldn\u2019t pull together what it would take to provide a spring season,\u201d Elwell said. \u201cSo we moved forward with the decision.
