{"id":2457708,"date":"2020-04-27T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2020-04-27T06:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/?p=324940"},"modified":"2020-04-27T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2020-04-27T06:00:00","slug":"aspen-city-council-to-vote-on-mandatory-face-masks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/kspn\/local-news\/aspen-city-council-to-vote-on-mandatory-face-masks\/","title":{"rendered":"Aspen City Council to vote on mandatory face masks"},"content":{"rendered":"<div readability=\"54.486204013378\">\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Aspen City Council will consider a resolution Monday that will require anyone in city limits to wear a face mask, in an effort to prevent the spread of COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Council is scheduled to meet in a virtual special meeting at 4 p.m. to vote on a <a id=\"N0x2c9dc70N0x2d11070:N0x2c9dc70N0x2de32e0\" href=\"https:\/\/d3n9y02raazwpg.cloudfront.net\/cityofaspen\/f404d3e0-867a-11ea-99b9-0050569183fa-da76106a-2e02-4fe6-bbb2-ae71e53e957b-1587769210.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">resolution<\/a><i class=\"fas fa-external-link-alt\"><\/i> that would adopt the public health order.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cUnder this authority, the city of Aspen has the police powers to do all acts and make all regulations which may be necessary or expedient for the promotion of health or the suppression of disease within the territorial limits of the city of Aspen,\u201d reads a memo from City Attorney Jim True.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Not wearing a face covering is subject to a $50 fine for the first offense; $250 for the second; and a mandatory court appearance for any subsequent offense and a fine of as much as $2,650.<\/p>\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col\" readability=\"6\">\n<div class=\"row at-donation at-donation-mobile p-0\" readability=\"7\">\n<div class=\"col-xl-4 p-2\">\n<div data-bg=\"url(https:\/\/cdn.aspentimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2020\/03\/AT-logo-white.png)\" class=\"p-0 mt-2 mb-2 h-75 text-center rocket-lazyload\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.aspentimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2020\/03\/AT-logo-white.png\" class=\"logo m-0 p-0 invisible\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><h3 class=\"d-inline mr-3\">Support Local Journalism<\/h3>\n<p><button class=\"btn d-inline\" type=\"button\" onclick=\"handleDonationButtonClickMidArticle()\">Donate<\/button><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">While the city of Glenwood Springs recently adopted a similar order, the Pitkin County Board of Public Health and the COVID-19 incident management team have stopped short by only recommending wearing a face mask.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\"><a id=\"N0x2c9dc70N0x2d110d0:N0x2c9dc70N0x2de3568\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/news\/city-of-aspen-considers-mandatory-face-mask-public-health-order\/\">Council members discussed the requirement last week<\/a>, after it was brought forward by Councilman Ward Hauenstein.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">His colleagues said they were supportive, but refrained from moving forward because of <a id=\"N0x2c9dc70N0x2d11130:N0x2c9dc70N0x2de3688\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/news\/threading-the-aspen-community-through-the-covid-19-crisis\/\">supply<\/a> and enforcement concerns.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends wearing face masks in public settings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Those masks should fit snugly against the side of the face, are secured with ties or ear loops, and include multiple layers of fabric, according to the CDC\u2019s recommendation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">The city\u2019s resolution proposes that \u201call persons shall wear face coverings when entering and while inside of a place of business open to the public (and) in such other public indoor or outdoor places where persons are unable to maintain safe social distancing (6 or more feet of separation) from others not of their own household.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Council also will have a virtual work session Monday in which it will discuss <a id=\"N0x2c9dc70N0x2d11250:N0x2c9dc70N0x2de3958\" href=\"https:\/\/d3n9y02raazwpg.cloudfront.net\/cityofaspen\/cce4a771-867a-11ea-99b9-0050569183fa-da76106a-2e02-4fe6-bbb2-ae71e53e957b-1587769296.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">expediting building permits and accelerating construction projects<\/a><i class=\"fas fa-external-link-alt\"><\/i> in order to fuel that sector of the economy while public health orders keep all nonessential businesses closed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">The Pitkin County Board of Health is scheduled to hold an emergency meeting Tuesday morning to determine the future of the county order.
