Bryan has created special &#8220;Commit to 6 Feet&#8221; pins to remind people to maintain safe social distancing during the coronavirus pandemic.<\/strong><br \/><em>Provided<\/em><\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Photos of family visits through nursing home windows are everywhere these days \u2014 in newspapers, on television and via social media.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">But one Carbondale resident and business owner decided to take her family\u2019s experience as an opportunity to send a friendly message about the importance of social distancing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Heather Bryan\u2019s mother, Judy Mackay, moved into Heritage Park Care Center in Carbondale in January, just weeks before in-person visits were prohibited due to the COVID-19 outbreak.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Keeping the novel coronavirus out of nursing homes, assisted living centers, senior housing and hospitals, and away from the most vulnerable populations, has been extra challenging \u2014 limiting families to video or phone chats, or that now emblematic \u201cface-to-face\u201d greeting through the window.<\/p>\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col\" readability=\"6\">\n<div class=\"row at-donation at-donation-mobile p-0\" readability=\"7\">\n<div class=\"col-xl-4 p-2\">\n<div data-bg=\"url(https:\/\/cdn.aspentimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2020\/03\/AT-logo-white.png)\" class=\"p-0 mt-2 mb-2 h-75 text-center rocket-lazyload\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.aspentimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2020\/03\/AT-logo-white.png\" class=\"logo m-0 p-0 invisible\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><h3 class=\"d-inline mr-3\">Support Local Journalism<\/h3>\n<p><button class=\"btn d-inline\" type=\"button\" onclick=\"handleDonationButtonClickMidArticle()\">Donate<\/button><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Bryan took the cue and decided to come up with a fun way to remind people to keep their distance from one another and help them understand the necessity of it all.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">The owner of Jupiter Engraving, a startup venture through Carbondale\u2019s Coventure, Bryan is normally busy designing commemorative pins for stadiums, golf courses and other sporting venues.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">With most of her accounts suspended during the business shutdowns that resulted from the pandemic, she decided to innovate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">She created a special \u201c6 feet\u201d pin for people to wear, as a reminder to maintain safe social distancing and prevent the spread of the virus. She launched <a href=\"http:\/\/www.committo6ft.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">http:\/\/www.committo6ft.com<\/a><i class=\"fas fa-external-link-alt\"><\/i> to share her message and take pin orders.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cWe visit mom at the window every day, and just try to make her laugh,\u201d Bryan said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Through her pin project, she said, \u201cI commit for my mom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">The spark for the idea came in trying to explain to her elementary school children the importance of social distancing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cIt\u2019s a hard concept for kids, or anyone who\u2019s used to being social,\u201d she said. \u201cThe pin makes it personal, and it\u2019s just a nice reminder to social distance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">All proceeds from the pin sales are being donated to World Vision to help distribute life-sustaining supplies during the global pandemic, such as food, personal hygiene products and clean water.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">For every five pins purchased, a special red pin is donated to a health care worker. The regular pins come in gold, silver and bronze.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Bryan also has a dedicated Facebook page.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cI just think about movie theaters and restaurants when they reopen, and any place where there might be a lot of people \u2014 it\u2019s just a good reminder to wear one of these,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText Subhead\">STAYING IN, BUT STAYING SAFE<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Staying in \u2014 and keeping visitors from the general population out \u2014 has become a way of life as well for many normally active senior citizens living in the various senior housing and assisted living facilities in Garfield County.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Private residential communities, such as Renew Roaring Fork assisted living, memory care and respite care, have asked residents to not leave the grounds and don\u2019t allow visitors while the public health restrictions are in place.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cWe\u2019re essentially confined to our rooms, but they did open up the dining room last week,\u201d Renew resident Hal Sundin said. \u201cWe sit one person to a table, and nobody is allowed to exit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Prior to the dining room opening, residents were having their meals delivered to their apartments, he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cWe\u2019re pretty much isolated from the outside world, which isn\u2019t really a bad thing,\u201d Sundin said. \u201cWe can still walk the halls and go out on the deck outside the dining room, so we do get outside the building if we want.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Carleton \u201cHub\u201d Hubbard also lives at Renew with his wife, Mim.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cThey treat us good, and the food is good,\u201d Hubbard said. \u201cWe\u2019re all safe and healthy, so that\u2019s been a good thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Hubbard said he\u2019s been doing a lot of reading, getting out of the apartment for walks on occasion, and \u201cprobably sleeping too much, which is easy to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">They did have one \u201cwindow visitor\u201d when their daughter came by to say hi, and they\u2019ve had video visits with their new great-grandtriplets in Casper, Wyoming, and another great-grandchild in Montana.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Senior housing run by the Garfield County Housing Authority and those administered under the U.S. Housing and Urban Development (HUD) program also have rules around visitations and use of common areas, which are closed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">The Monroe Group, which manages the Manors I and Manors II HUD apartments in Glenwood Springs has closed its on-site offices and all common areas.
