{"id":2458467,"date":"2020-05-14T21:28:00","date_gmt":"2020-05-15T03:28:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/?p=325766"},"modified":"2020-05-14T21:28:00","modified_gmt":"2020-05-15T03:28:00","slug":"aspen-institute-will-return-8-million-in-ppp-money","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/kspn\/local-news\/aspen-institute-will-return-8-million-in-ppp-money\/","title":{"rendered":"Aspen Institute will return $8 million in PPP money"},"content":{"rendered":"<div readability=\"53.304507819687\">\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">The Aspen Institute is now part of a list that includes the Los Angeles Lakers, Nathan\u2019s Famous Inc., Shake Shack and other companies and organizations that are returning coronavirus relief loans issued by the Small Business Administration in the aftermath of public backlash.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cIn recent days we have talked with our stakeholders about our having received a loan through the Small Business Administration\u2019s Paycheck Protection Program (PPP),\u201d the Institute said in a statement posted to its website Thursday. \u201cWe believe that our application, which was made in the first week of the PPP, was consistent with the goals of the program. Upon listening to our communities and further reflection, we have made the decision to return the loan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cThe Aspen Institute is committed to doing our part to help the country and the world both recover from and rebuild after this global pandemic. We stand with all who are trying to make a difference in very difficult times.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">The statement, the result of an Institute board of trustees meeting Thursday, came after <a id=\"N0x1ad1b80N0x1a8e160:N0x1ad1b80N0x1a5bc28\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/2020\/05\/14\/aspen-institute-sba\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Washington Post reported<\/a> Wednesday the think tank received an $8 million loan to help retain its 430-person staff even though its endowment is worth $115 million.<\/p>\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col\" readability=\"6\">\n<div class=\"row at-donation at-donation-mobile p-0\" readability=\"7\">\n<div class=\"col-xl-4 p-2\">\n<div data-bg=\"url(https:\/\/cdn.aspentimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2020\/03\/AT-logo-white.png)\" class=\"p-0 mt-2 mb-2 h-75 text-center rocket-lazyload\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.aspentimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2020\/03\/AT-logo-white.png\" class=\"logo m-0 p-0 invisible\"><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><h3 class=\"d-inline mr-3\">Support Local Journalism<\/h3>\n<p><button class=\"btn d-inline\" type=\"button\" onclick=\"handleDonationButtonClickMidArticle()\">Donate<\/button><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">The Institute previously told the Post, in defense of the loan, that 80% of its endowment is restricted and the board already had approved $7.5 million of it to be used for operational purposes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">The Post story quoted Aspen Institute fellow and moderator Dele Olojede, also a Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter, who said accepting the loan ran counter to the nonprofit\u2019s mission.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cThose who purport to be values-based and public-spirited leaders cannot at the same time put self interest first, when there is so much human suffering and death,\u201d he was quoted as saying before the Institute said it would return the money.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">The Institute plays host to the Aspen Ideas Festival, a major summer event that attracts industry leaders from around the world.
