(Kelsey Brunner\/The Aspen Times)\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"caption-toggle\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/news\/marble-wants-mellower-memorial-day-weekend-tells-visitors-to-stay-away-a-bit-longer\/#\" class=\"show-captions\">Show Captions<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/news\/marble-wants-mellower-memorial-day-weekend-tells-visitors-to-stay-away-a-bit-longer\/#\" class=\"hide-captions\">Hide Captions<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">The tiny town of Marble is used to being woken up from its winter slumber by throngs of tourists in the late spring, but not this Memorial Day weekend.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">The community\u2019s leaders are asking would-be visitors to respect both the state\u2019s \u201csafe at home\u201d order requiring Coloradans to recreate with 10 miles of their residences, as well as Gunnison County\u2019s public health order summary stating \u201calthough this order will allow Coloradans from other counties to visit Gunnison County to recreate starting on May 27, they will not be allowed to do so if the Colorado governor continues to impose restrictions on recreational travel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">In other words, for the next week, Marble \u2014 a 56-mile drive from Aspen by way of state highways 82 and 133 \u2014 will remain closed to people who live 10 miles or more outside of the town until public health orders move into the next phase as scheduled the last week of May.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cThe town of Marble faces an onslaught of recreational visitors, ATV users, motorcyclists, hikers, Jeep tours \u2014 I can go on and on \u2014 and it overwhelms the community,\u201d Ron Leach said Wednesday.<\/p>\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col\" readability=\"6\">\n<div class=\"row at-donation at-donation-mobile p-0\" readability=\"7\">\n<div class=\"col-xl-4 p-2\">\n<div data-bg=\"url(https:\/\/cdn.aspentimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2020\/03\/AT-logo-white.png)\" class=\"p-0 mt-2 mb-2 h-75 text-center rocket-lazyload\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.aspentimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2020\/03\/AT-logo-white.png\" class=\"logo m-0 p-0 invisible\"><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><h3 class=\"d-inline mr-3\">Support Local Journalism<\/h3>\n<p><button class=\"btn d-inline\" type=\"button\" onclick=\"handleDonationButtonClickMidArticle()\">Donate<\/button><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Leach is Marble\u2019s town administrator and retired as chief of Carbondale and Rural Fire Protection District in 2018.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cThe Town Council in Marble is very conservative in their approach to the COVID situation, and given the fact that we don\u2019t have a law enforcement presence, all we can do is get the message out and ask for voluntary compliance,\u201d he said, \u201cand we would appreciate it if out-of-county visitors refrain from coming to Marble during the Gunnison County health orders.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">The town sent word to local media May 15 that its trustees were aiming to \u201cslow the flow\u201d into Marble by closing public services. And over the weekend, Gunnison County sheriff\u2019s deputies were monitoring Beaver Lake, popular with outdoors types ranging from anglers to stand-up paddleboarders.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cThe Gunnison County sheriff was advising visitors on the lake of the rules,\u201d Leach said. \u201cAnd most people were not aware of those rules.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Authorities also will have a presence in Marble this holiday weekend, the town said Thursday in an update.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cGunnison County Sheriff\u2019s Department personnel have been dispatched to the Upper Crystal River area on recent weekends, advising visitors who are not from Gunnison County to leave Marble and the popular recreation spots surrounding it \u2014 Beaver Lake, the Lead King Loop jeep trail, and the many hiking trails around Marble,\u201d the latest news release states. \u201cLaw enforcement presence will continue in Marble through the upcoming Memorial Day weekend.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">The 2010 census reported Marble had population of 131 residents. Leach said that figure is roughly the same today. Town limits encompass two-fifths of a square mile.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Pitkin County\u2019s Board of Health recommends that Pitkin residents can recreate in \u201cassociated valleys\u201d of Crystal and Fryingpan so long as they use common sense during the pandemic. Yet that recommendation factors in just the Pitkin portion of those valleys, both of which cross lines into other jurisdictions \u2014 the Crystal into Gunnison County and the Fryingpan into Eagle County.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">The Pitkin County board reasoned that Polis\u2019 order was more aimed at Front Rangers seeking a getaway to the mountains.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Gunnison County\u2019s most recent health order, delivered May 13, eased up on second-home owner restrictions, and Leach said non-resident homeowners are permitted in Marble.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">A summary of the Gunnison order states: \u201cNon-resident homeowners are no longer required to isolate and self-quarantine upon their arrival in Gunnison County (but are still encouraged to do so) unless they test positive for COVID-19.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">In addition to Beaver Lake, other attractions in Marble include the historic Yule Marble quarry and Slow Groovin\u2019 BBQ. The owner, Ryan Vinciguerra, also is the mayor of Marble.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">The barbecue restaurant, essentially the only game in town when it comes to dining out, is open seasonally May 1 through Halloween.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cThe summer is already small enough,\u201d Vinciguerra said. \u201cIt\u2019s a tough operating schedule when you\u2019re just open in the summer, so it is challenging with the 10-mile rule. \u2026 If it stayed that way for the entire summer, that would be a doomsday scenario.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Vinciguerra and Town Trustee Larry Good said the town is taking a united front on the 10-mile visitation rule, with Leach as the spokesman.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Good said town was quiet as usual during the wintertime, but it picked up a bit when family members had to return from college because of the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cIt\u2019s been quiet,\u201d he said, \u201cand we\u2019re looking forward to when it can ramp up,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\"><a href=\"mailto:rcarroll@aspentimes.com\">rcarroll@aspentimes.com<\/a><\/p>\n<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/news\/marble-wants-mellower-memorial-day-weekend-tells-visitors-to-stay-away-a-bit-longer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">via:: The Aspen Times<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>At the Country Road 133 and County Road 3 junction, a sign expresses that nonessential travel in Gunnison County is illegal on Wednesday, May 20, 2020.
