{"id":2458765,"date":"2020-05-23T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2020-05-23T06:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/?p=326241"},"modified":"2020-05-23T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2020-05-23T06:00:00","slug":"marketing-campaign-ready-to-make-the-dream-of-aspen-a-covid-19-reality","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/kspn\/local-news\/marketing-campaign-ready-to-make-the-dream-of-aspen-a-covid-19-reality\/","title":{"rendered":"Marketing campaign ready to make the dream of Aspen a COVID-19 reality"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText DropCap\">As destination marketing operators around the state are reeling from what\u2019s been described as mischaracterized media reports that the Colorado Tourism Office is telling potential visitors to stay away amid the COVID-19 crisis, agencies like the Aspen Chamber Resort Association are ready to hit the \u201cgo\u201d button when public health orders allow tourist accommodations to open in the next few days.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Media outlets last week reported that the state\u2019s tourism office four-phase \u201cWait, Ready, Set, Go\u201d marketing plan effectively told people not to come to Colorado during the waiting stage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">That set off panic among local lodging companies and businesses, believing that dollars were being put toward \u201cstay away\u201d messages.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">That\u2019s not the case, according to a May 14 letter from Cathy Ritter, the director of the <a id=\"N0xeed730N0xea9b90:N0xeed730N0x107a5c8\" href=\"https:\/\/www.colorado.com\/colorado-travel-covid-19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Colorado Tourism Office<\/a>, who explained to industry partners in the state that media reports sensationalized the plan into falsehood.<\/p>\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col\" readability=\"6\">\n<div class=\"row at-donation at-donation-mobile p-0\" readability=\"7\">\n<div class=\"col-xl-4 p-2\">\n<div data-bg=\"url(https:\/\/cdn.aspentimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2020\/03\/AT-logo-white.png)\" class=\"p-0 mt-2 mb-2 h-75 text-center rocket-lazyload\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.aspentimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2020\/03\/AT-logo-white.png\" class=\"logo m-0 p-0 invisible\"><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><h3 class=\"d-inline mr-3\">Support Local Journalism<\/h3>\n<p><button class=\"btn d-inline\" type=\"button\" onclick=\"handleDonationButtonClickMidArticle()\">Donate<\/button><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cRight now, there\u2019s no question our state is in Wait mode,\u201d the letter reads. \u201cThe #WaitingtoCO campaign is a short-term grassroots plan aimed at inspiring travelers to keep dreaming of Colorado until we can actively promote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cMany destinations are sharing this same message in a mournful way. We\u2019ve chosen to do it in a fun way \u2014 with no paid media to save our dollars for when it matters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Ritter\u2019s letter to the Colorado Tourism Board didn\u2019t reverberate within the local business sector for at least a few days.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cIt alarmed a lot of people,\u201d said Eliza Voss, ACRA\u2019s director of marketing. \u201cThere was definitely a concern from our lodging partners but once people saw the clarification from Cathy Ritter they felt more calm about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">ACRA\u2019s destination marketing plan mirrors the state\u2019s in many ways, particularly during the holding pattern the Aspen resort economy is in due to Pitkin County\u2019s public health order that has restaurants, bars, lodges and hotels closed until Wednesday. Gatherings are currently limited to 10 people or fewer but likely will move to 50 next week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cOurs is keeping the dream alive,\u201d Voss said of ACRA\u2019s initial marketing plan that is designed to elicit images of vacationing here.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">As soon as public health orders allow, ACRA is ready to move on its <a id=\"N0xeed730N0xea9d70:N0xeed730N0x107aa48\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/news\/aspen-electeds-reluctant-to-open-economy-but-approve-500k-loan-for-marketing\/\">$500,000 \u201cSustain Interest, Engage Community &amp; Recover\u201d plan<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cOnce we are open we\u2019ll pay for ads and we will be marketing to regional drive markets,\u201d Voss said, adding that second homeowners, even sans the Aspen Music Festival and big summer events, are welcome here with open arms. \u201cWe\u2019ve heard the faculty from the (Music Associates of Aspen) are still coming because it\u2019s just a great place to be, so it\u2019s almost planning the unplanned summer \u2026 like a childhood summer where the day will take you outside.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">That could be a virtual concert on the computer from the house patio, or for those who will drive here to take advantage of outdoor recreation in one of the most beautiful mountain communities in the world.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cThe outdoors is definitely the appeal this summer, but we want to welcome the second homeowners back when they are ready to be here,\u201d Voss said. \u201cWe want the community to feel safe when we reopen and embrace the mind, body, spirit\u201d ethos of Aspen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">ACRA\u2019s \u201c7,908 ways to spend local\u201d marketing campaign will target second homeowners and overnight guests on how to shop, eat and play in town.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Advertising dollars initially will be spent in Utah and Colorado to entice those drive markets. However, because the COVID-19 situation is fluid, ACRA will rely heavily on social media buys, which have targeted audiences and are strong on imagery, Voss said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">The chamber will continue to push its sustainability messaging, asking visitors to take the <a id=\"N0xeed730N0xea9dd0:N0xeed730N0x107ae38\" href=\"https:\/\/aspenchamber.org\/pledge\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Aspen Pledge<\/a>, which is a commitment to tread lightly on the environment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Voss said there\u2019s a hunger among Americans to travel this summer, noting that when Hilton Head, South Carolina, opened its economy, it saw a surge in visitation in the community they were not expecting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Ritter\u2019s office expects tourism to be steady and hopes for growth, which depends on public health orders.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Colorado Gov. Jared Polis is expected to make decisions on the next public health order by Monday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">The Pitkin County Board of Public Health has signaled that it will align with the state\u2019s public health orders in the future.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cAs more restrictions lift and more of the tourism economy reopens, we are ready to pounce on opportunities to promote,\u201d Ritter wrote to industry partners. \u201cEach of the next three phases of our plan involves active promotion \u2014 first to in-state travelers, then to drive markets and then to our high-potential national audiences. It is absolutely critical to be ready to go to market as these opportunities unfold because the competition for travelers will be fierce.
