The Italian Winter Sports Federation (FISI) announced Sunday it would like to postpone next year\u2019s Alpine skiing world championships in Cortina until March 2022 in order to avoid the championships being canceled or shortened due to the fallout in Italy from the coronavirus pandemic.<\/strong><br \/><em>Giovanni Auletta\/AP | AP<\/em><\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Italian officials made a formal request on Monday to postpone the 2021 alpine skiing world championships in Cortina d\u2019Ampezzo until March 2022.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Considering the fallout in Italy from the coronavirus pandemic, Italian Olympic Committee president Giovanni Malago said \u201cthis is the best solution\u201d in order to avoid the worlds being canceled or shortened.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cIt\u2019s a decision in which we both lose but we realize this is the best \u2014 or maybe the only thing \u2014 to do,\u201d Malago said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">The Italian Winter Sports Federation said if the worlds were canceled it would mean a loss of 30 million euros (more than $30 million).<\/p>\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col\" readability=\"6\">\n<div class=\"row at-donation at-donation-mobile p-0\" readability=\"7\">\n<div class=\"col-xl-4 p-2\">\n<div data-bg=\"url(https:\/\/cdn.aspentimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2020\/03\/AT-logo-white.png)\" class=\"p-0 mt-2 mb-2 h-75 text-center rocket-lazyload\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.aspentimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2020\/03\/AT-logo-white.png\" class=\"logo m-0 p-0 invisible\"><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><h3 class=\"d-inline mr-3\">Support Local Journalism<\/h3>\n<p><button class=\"btn d-inline\" type=\"button\" onclick=\"handleDonationButtonClickMidArticle()\">Donate<\/button><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cPostponing the event would allow us to put forth the best in terms of tradition and Italian organization on the path toward Milan-Cortina 2026,\u201d said Flavio Roda, the president of the Italian federation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">The Italian federation presented the proposal during an International Ski Federation (FIS) board meeting following a joint decision by the organizing committee in Cortina, the Veneto region, and the Italian government.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">A decision from the FIS is expected on July 1.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Cortina was already forced to cancel the World Cup finals in March this year due to the advancing virus, which has accounted for more than 30,000 known deaths in Italy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Moving the worlds to March 2022 would put the event one month after the 2022 Beijing Olympics and likely force FIS to cancel that season\u2019s finals in Meribel and Courchevel, France.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">The Cortina worlds are currently scheduled for Feb. 7-21, 2021.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">The worlds are usually held every other winter, in odd years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Cortina is also slated to host alpine events during the 2026 Milan-Cortina Olympics.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Also on Monday, the Italian federation proposed hosting a snowboard cross city event in downtown Bergamo next winter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Bergamo, one of the hardest hit cities in Italy by the virus, is home to Olympic snowboard cross gold medalist Michela Moioli.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Bergamo is located in the Lombardy region where nearly 16,000 people \u2014 including Moioli\u2019s grandmother \u2014 have died from the virus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cWe want to provide visibility for Bergamo,\u201d Moioli told the Gazzetta dello Sport. \u201cOur city is not only about the coronavirus disaster. It\u2019s true, a lot of people have died. But not everyone.
