Deputies with the Summit County Sheriff’s Office responded to Summit Middle School on Friday after a threatening message was left on a bathroom wall.
On Friday morning a student at the middle school discovered writing in one of the bathrooms containing a list of students’ names, according to a statement from the Summit School District. School district administrators and law enforcement were notified immediately, and were able to make contact with the student, a 13-year-old boy, who wrote the list. Officials determined at that point there was no threat to other students.
According to the statement, the district is currently working through the disciplinary process for the student, though won’t release any further details at this time due to privacy concerns. The investigation is ongoing, and charges are pending, according to the sheriff’s office.
The district is asking anyone with additional information about the incident to contact local law enforcement. Students and families with safety concerns are also encouraged to report their concerns to the school resource officer, law enforcement or through the state’s Safe2Tell anonymous tip line at 1-877-542-SAFE (1-877-542-7233).
“The Summit County Sheriff’s Office takes all threats to the community seriously,” said Sheriff Jaime FitzSimons. “At this time, we have no reason to believe that there is a security or safety risk to students, staff or facilities. I encourage families to continue to talk with their children about safety and the importance about reporting any concerns promptly to parents, school officials, law enforcement or Safe2Tell Colorado.”
