Letter: Faux patriotism? You either love your country or you don’t

I feel I must respond to the letter from Denise Everham, who thought Constitution Week was “nationalism wrapped in God, country and the flag.” She also thought “faux patriotism disguised as love for the Constitution was disturbing.”

Actually, I am scratching my head because I don’t see anything wrong with loving the Constitution, as well as God, country and the flag. Furthermore, I have no idea what she means by “faux patriotism” because you either love your country or you don’t. Period.

We are so blessed to have had founding fathers, who though not perfect, had the vision to write a document that has served us for more than two centuries. While our country is also not perfect, it is still closer to perfection than anywhere else on earth. Patriotism is really just a form of gratitude that we are privileged to be citizens of this great nation.

I would like to thank all the businesses who supported Constitution Week. I loved it and am looking forward to next year’s special celebration of our country’s most sacred document.
