More than 100 protesters march in Breckenridge as part of Global Climate Strike

BRECKENRIDGE — Walking at a fervent clip and waving signs under a baking sun, more than 100 Summit County residents marched down Airport Road to Main Street in Breckenridge in solidarity with the Global Climate Strike event taking place in 150 countries across the planet.

The march, organized by Colorado Mountain College Breckenridge students, began at the college’s parking lot, snaked along the sidewalks on Airport Road and ended on Main Street in downtown Breckenridge.

The protesters chanted slogans calling for immediate action on carbon emissions and water pollution, and to “fight back” against those who would continue to pollute as global temperatures break record high averages year after year.

Connor Stone, a sustainability student at CMC Breckenridge, marched at the front of the throng, which extended a quarter mile along Airport Road.

“I’m marching to show solidarity for a global issue we’re all facing,” Stone said as fellow marchers streamed past. “We need to come together and start making some changes and wake some people up. That’s what we’re out here doing, spreading the word.”

The Global Climate Strike reportedly dew hundreds of thousands of protesters to the streets across the nation, with the New York City public school district excusing its 1.1 million students from class to participate.
