The Rotary Club of Summit County announced on Tuesday, May 7, that the ice device has taken the plunge. Rotary placed the device in the middle of a frozen Dillon Reservoir on March 9.

The device, when the ice melts, plops into the water, freezing its internal clock in time and making some shrewd person out there a cool $4,000 with the chance to earn more.

Every year, the club’s fundraiser sells about 5,000 tickets. Having a ticket means you get to guess when the device — a 55-gallon drum full of air and weighted on one side — takes its spring plunge. After it’s been retrieved, the club checks the clock and identifies the winners. Last year, the device dropped on May 6.

The first-place winner will receive $4,000. Second- and third-place winners receive $2,000 and $1,000, respectively. The first-place winner will draw one card from a deck of cards. If the ace of spades is chosen, the prize will increase to $9,000!
