Aspen police arrested a local man Saturday on a warrant issued by the FBI over threatening emails sent to a person or people in New Mexico, an official said Monday.
Andrew Graham, 38, was arrested in downtown Aspen and taken to the Pitkin County Jail, where deputies discovered a substance on him that later tested positive for cocaine, Aspen police Sgt. Mike Tracey said.
Graham was charged with possession of cocaine, he said. Tracey didn’t know the exact federal criminal charges Graham is facing. Graham does not have a local address and has been “couch surfing” in this area, he said.
The recipient of Graham’s emails in Santa Fe contacted Aspen police Dec. 21 and reported that they included death threats, Tracey said. The emails were over a civil matter involving money, he said.
On Saturday, an FBI agent notified Aspen police that the threatening emails were continuing and asked officers to arrest Graham, Tracey said.
Graham was incarcerated at the Pitkin County Jail on Monday and will likely be handed over to federal agents in the near future, he said.
