Demon boys fall to Montrose; RF girls win Weld Central tourney

By Josh Carney Taking on the Montrose Indians Saturday afternoon inside the original Chavez-Spencer Gymnasium at Glenwood Springs High School, the Glenwood Springs Demons boys basketball team came up short at the final buzzer, falling to the Indians 55-52, dropping the Demons to 3-3 on the season, and 1-2 at their own home tournament.
Against the Indians, Glenwood got off to a slow start Saturday, scoring just 5 first-quarter points, falling behind 11-5 after one quarter of play. The Demons bounced back in the second quarter outscoring the Indians 16-13 to pull within 3 points at the half at 24-21 Montrose senior guard Angel Garcia scored 5 points in the second and senior Chano Gonzalez scored 4 points, hitting two free throws.
In the second half, Glenwood scored 12 third-quarter points thanks to 4 points from senior Kevin Ayon, but the Indians scored 14 points in the third, extending their lead to 5 points heading into the fourth quarter.
In the final quarter of play Glenwood erupted for 19 points as Gonzalez hit two shots and two layups, while Garcia drilled two 3-pointers and two layups, but the Indians kept pace, scoring 17 fourth-quarter points to hold on for the 55-52 win.
Gonzalez led the Demons with 15 points, while Garcia added 13 points. Senior Wyatt Ewer added 8 points, while Ayon added 6 points. The Demons (3-3) head to Longmont Thursday for another tournament, the final one before the holiday break.

GIRLS BASKETBALL
Roaring Fork 39, Falcon 31
Taking on the Falcon Falcons Saturday evening in the Weld Central Tournament championship game, the Roaring Fork Rams girls basketball team came out on top in a 39-31 decision, claiming the tournament championship.
Roaring Fork raced out to a 23-12 lead at the half against Falcon and never looked back, pulling off the 8-point win in the tournament finale.
For the Rams, senior Gaby Santana and senior Logan Erickson scored 12 points each, nearly matching Falcon’s team total on the day, while junior Caroline Wisroth and junior Emily Broadhurst added 6 points and 4 points each.
Roaring Fork (5-0) travels to Montrose Thursday for a matchup with Palisade in the Montrose Tournament opener.

BOYS BASKETBALL
Olathe 47, Roaring Fork 42
On the road Saturday for the final game of the Resurrection Christian Tournament, the Roaring Fork Rams – again playing without three starters due to injuries – fell to the Olathe Pirates 47-42.
Senior Aidan Sloan put up a strong showing for the Rams, nearly carrying them to the win. The senior forward scored a team-high 21 points, including 8 points in the first quarter and 6 points in the fourth quarter, but the Rams fell short.
Along with Sloan, senior Oscar Miranda scored 13 points, while sophomore Graham Pietch scored 6 points.

WRESTLING
The Rifle Bears, Grand Valley Cardinals, and Coal Ridge Titans’ wrestling teams competed at the Delta Panthers Invitational Saturday morning. Rifle placed 6th as a team with 117 points, while Grand Valley placed 7th with 108 points. Coal Ridge placed 12th with 29 points.
