Vicki Barrett describes her introduction to digital art this way: “I have painted, done sculpture, done slumped glass in kilns and mastered stained glass. What turned into my favorite medium was brought about by being on a small sailboat where a wax sculpture, a kiln or even just having sheets of glass was not the best of ideas.”
A 40-year veteran of underwater photography from sites around the world, Barrett embraced digital photography when it become the new medium will a passion—and it all fit nicely on the family’s 38-foot sailboat along with their great Dane, Bella.
This new medium came to include a digital tablet. Instead of a canvas the artist uses a stylus on a screen that digitally represents over 1,200 brushes.
“In this medium,” Barrett said, “you are only limited by your imagination.”
Now living in the mountains of Colorado, Barrett has become known for her large triptychs of aspens and cameos of the iconic West. These artworks are printed with ink that is heated, turned into a gas and imbedded onto an aluminum panel. The result is an artwork with highly saturated colors and a luminance not otherwise possible.
Barrett will be visiting Horton Fine Art to explain how her digital tools work. Meet her are see her art today and tomorrow from 4:30 to 7 p.m.
