By Josh Carney The Glenwood Springs Demons’ girls swim team opened the 2018 season Friday afternoon at the Glenwood Springs Comunity Center in a 6-team meet with the likes of Aspen, Fruita Monument, Grand Junction, Moffat County and Summit.
In the 6-team meet, Glenwood Springs came out on top, holding off Grand Junction by 40 points, winning with 285 team points.
At the home meet to open the season, Glenwood won two of the 12 events, Glenwood girls win 2 of the 12 events on the way to winning the team meet.
Freshman Amy Madsen won the 500-yard freestyle event for the Demons, while junior Abbie Scruton won the diving event for Glenwood Springs.
Along with Madsen and Scruton’s wins, the Glenwood 200 Medley Relay team of Macy Stinson, Ellie MacPherson, Kylee Smith, and Madseon placed second in their event, while the 200 Freestyle Relay team of Kaitlyn Vanderhoof, Stinson, Smith, and MacPherson placed second in the race.
MacPherson also added a second-place finish in the 100M Breaststroke.
In the 100-yard Butterfly, Smith placed third overall, while sophomore Sophie Moon placed third in the 100-yard Freestyle race. Madsen added a third-place finish in the 100-yard Backstroke, while the 400-yard Freestyle Relay team of Sally McDonnell, Kendall Mueller, Madsen, and Vanderhoof placed third overall in their race.
Libby Claasen added a third-place finish in the 1 meter diving event.
At the home meet, the 200 Medley Relay, 200 Freestyle Relay, and 400 Freestyle Relay teams recorded state qualifying times, while Madsen (100 Backstroke, 500 Freestyle), MacPherson (100 Breaststroke, 200 Individual Medley), Stinson (200 Individual Medley, 100 Backstroke), Smith (200 Freestyle, 100 Butterfly), and Haley Diemer (200 Freestyle, 500 Freestyle) recorded state qualifying times in individual events for the Demons.
“I’m very pleased with our first conference competition,” said Steve Vanderhoof, Glenwood Springs’ head coach. “While we only won two events, I am again very pleased with the depth of our team. We placed well in all the events, with the maximum-allowed three girls scoring points in all the events, including relays.
Vanderhoof went on to explain that the league is must faster then last year, and for the Glenwood girls to come out and swim and dive as well as they did this early in the year is really fun.
“A lot of the girls swam continuously over the summer and fall, and it really is showing great results,” said Vanderhoof.
On Saturday, the Demons split up for meets in Aspen and Grand Junction, starting with the Aspen Duals Saturday morning.
In Aspen, Glenwood picked up its second win of the season, beating Aspen – the 2017 3A state champions – by 29 team points.
Madsen picked up another win early in the season, coming out on top in the 200-yard Individual Medley, while MacPherson won the 500-yard Freestyle, and Scruton won the diving competition. In team relays, the 400 Freestyle Relay team of MacPherson, McDonnell, Vanderhoof, and Madsen won the relay.
