In addition to the incredible misleading statistics often cited by Trump xenophobes, there is a disquieting habit of taking quotes out of context or attributing them to some unnamed amorphous group such as “what they say,” (“Fences make good neighbors,” Post Independent, Jan. 8).
The “good neighbors” etc. quote is not,”what they say.” It is from the Robert Frost poem, “Mending Wall.” In the poem it is the author’s ignorant neighbor who makes the statement, “Good fences make good neighbors.” The poem concludes about the wall, “Something there is that doesn’t love a wall, that sends the frozen groundswell under it…” and, “Something there is that doesn’t love a wall, that wants it down.”
