Natural gas leak prompts evacuation at Red Sandstone Camp Minturn campus

MINTURN — Red Sandstone Elementary School’s Camp Minturn campus was evacuated this morning due to a natural gas leak occurring outside of the modular classrooms. Students were relocated to Vail Ski and Snowboard Academy and all students are accounted for and safe. Excel Energy is on-site and making repairs.

At 10:35 a.m., Tracy LeClair of the Eagle River Fire Protection District in a text said the leak had been found, in a pipeline junction outside the modular buildings the school is using this school year. LeClair said that repairs were expected to be completed within the next 90 minutes or so.

Classes are continuing as normal for students in kindergarten through fifth grade at the Vail Ski and Snowboard Academy campus. Ski and Snowboard academy students were off campus for competitions. Eagle County Schools Chief Communications Officer Dan Dougherty in an email wrote that Red Sandstone students were able to move into those classrooms.

Red Sandstone’s operations have been moved to Minturn this school year because the Vail school is in the midst of an extensive renovation project.

Preschool classes have been canceled for Monday. Dougherty wrote that technical licensing issues forced that facility to close for the day. Parents have been alerted to pick up their preschool students by noon from Vail Ski and Snowboard Academy at 1 Academy Loop in Minturn.

Dougherty wrote that both elementary school and preschool classes are expected to return to normal on Tuesday.
