New Castle house fire displaces family of four

A family of four is displaced after Colorado River Fire Rescue crews responded to a house fire in the Apple Tree neighborhood south of New Castle just after 10 a.m. on Saturday.

Though firefighters managed to contain the flames to one building, the house where the fire started could not be saved, according to fire district officials.

The home was a total loss, according to CRFR spokeswoman Maria Pina. Various agencies, including the Colorado American Red Cross, assisted the family of four – two adults and two children – who lived inside.

Two of the occupants were transported to the hospital for observation, but no significant injuries were reported.

Colorado Red Cross spokesperson Andrea Carlson said two Red Cross personnel responded to the scene and provided disaster assistance to the family, including lodging and immediate financial aid. Carlson said the organization also connected the family with disaster health services and other health services if need be.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, according to CRFR officials. Other responding agencies included the Glenwood Springs Fire Department, Garfield County Sheriff’s Office and Xcel Energy.
