Taking on the Coronado Cougars Monday night in Sertich, the Glenwood Springs Demons varsity hockey team rolled to a 3-0 win, pushing its win streak to four games.
Against the Cougars, junior Ryan Kotz got the Demons on the board in the first period at the 10:55 mark, scoring a power play goal off of assists from Colter Strautman and Max Mencimer. The two teams went scoreless in the second period, keeping the Demons in front 1-0 heading into the final 17 minutes of action.
In the third period, Glenwood salted the game away as senior captain Devlin Powell scored even-strength goals a the 9:37 and 15:43 marks off of assists from Mencimer, Connor Powell and Dylan Webster.
Glenwood took four penalties in the win, cutting down on the number of penalties they usually take. In net, Hunter Hadsock stopped all 26 shots he faced to claim the shutout, while Coronado’s Marc Godec stopped 46 of the 49 shots he faced in the game.
Sitting at four wins in a row, Glenwood returns to action Saturday as the Demons take on the rival Battle Mountain Huskies at 5 p.m.
WRESTLING
Meeker 51, Rifle 24
On the road Tuesday night for a dual with the Meeker Cowboys, the Rifle Bears wrestling team dropped a tough 51-24 decision.
The dual started off at 220 pounds, where Meeker’s James Amick pinned Rifle’s Corey Edwards in 42 seconds, staking the Cowboys to a 6-0 lead. Rifle quickly responded at 285 pounds as Alejandro Robles pinned Meeker’s Reese Harvey in 51 seconds, tying the match at 6-6.
In the 106-pound match, Meeker’s Ty Goedert pinned Rifle’s Hunter Bercher in 3:06, before Meeker’s Kaleb Nielsen made it 18-6 with a pin of Rifle’s Chris Archuleta in 59 seconds.
Rifle’s Justin Henderson picked up a forfeit win in the 120-pound match to make it 18-12 before Rifle teammate Bryce Rowley pinned Meeker’s Charles Curry in 3:10 of the 126-pound match, knotting the dual up at 18-18.
The 132-pound match saw a double forfeit in the dual before Meeker’s Tyson Portwood pinned Rifle’s Uriel Gonzalez in 1:57 of the 138-pound match, pushing the Cowboys back in front 24-18. Talon Cordova quickly knotted the match back up at 24-24 thanks to a pin of Meeker’s Trinden Powell at 4:28 of the 145-pound match, but that would be it on the night for the Bears.
Following Cordova’s win by fall, Meeker won the next five matches — two by forfeit — to close out the Bears. In the 152-pound match, Meeker’s Tannen Kennedy pinned Rifle’s Conrad Demann in 3:09, while Brayden Woodward won by forfeit in the 160-pound weight class.
Jeremy Woodward also won by forfeit in the 170-pound slot, before Colby Clatterbaugh pinned Rifle’s Pedro Guardado in 4:55 of the 182-pound match.
In the final match of the night, Kesston Hobbs defeated Alex Guardado in the 195-pound match by decision (5-0), giving the Cowboys the 51-24 dual win over Rifle.
Rifle travels back to Meeker Saturday to compete in the Cowboy Duals.
