By Josh Carney Hitting the road Thursday afternoon for a quick trip to Glenwood Springs High School for the start of the annual Demon Invitational, the Coal Ridge Titans’ boys and girls basketball teams picked up big wins over Peak to Peak in the opening games of the invitational inside Chavez-Spencer Gymnasium.
The girls battled hard in a 6-point win by a score of 45-39, while the boys rolled to a 76-53.
In the girls game, the Titans raced out to a 12-4 lead in the first quarter as senior Adriana Varges scored 4 first-quarter points and junior Lyanna Nevarez scored 7 points in the first eight minutes of the game. Peak to Peak rallied in the second quarter by out-scoring the Titans 11-7, but the Titans remained in control at the half 19-15 as senior Kashley Morgan hit a 3-pointer and Varges added another bucket, sending the two teams into the halftime.
Coming out of the break, the Titans clamped down on defense and held Peak to Peak to 3 third-quarter points while scoring 9 points, stretching the lead to 28-18 as Varges scored 5 points in the third quarter pacing the Titan attack.
Holding a 10-point lead heading into the final quarter of play, Peak to Peak and Coal Ridge got into a shootout as Peak to Peak scored 21 fourth-quarter points, while Coal Ridge poured in 17.
In the final quarter, sophomore Taylor Wiescamp scored 7 of the Titans’ 17 points, while Nevarez scored 5 points and Varges scored 3 points, helping the Titans hold off Pumas.
Varges led the Titans with 14 points in the win, while Nevarez and Wiescamp added 13 and 11 points respectively.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Coal Ridge 76, Peak to Peak 53
Coming into the Demon Invitational ranked No. 3 in the state in 3A, the Coal Ridge Titans put on a show against the Peak to Peak Pumas at Glenwood Springs High School, rolling to a 23-point win as four players scored in double figures for the explosive Titans.
Coal Ridge raced to a 40-29 lead at the half as the Titans scored 20 points each in the first and second quarter as senior Jan Hernandez scored 6 points in the first quarter and 3 points in the second quarter, and junior Austin Gerber added 6 points in the first quarter and 2 points in the second, pacing the balanced Titans attack.
Coming out of the half, Coal Ridge pulled away, scoring 19 points in the third and 17 points in the fourth while holding the Pumas to just 6 fourth-quarter points.
In the win, senior Payton White led the Titans with 17 points, while Hernandez scored 12 and seniors Jesus Camunez and Kevin DiMarco added 11 points each. Gerber chipped in with 8 points and Jeremy Funes scored 6 points.
Rifle 45, Rangely 21, Meeker Cowboys Tournament
On the road Thursday evening for a matchup with Rangely Panthers in the Meeker Cowboys Tournament opener, the Rifle Bears rolled to a 24-point win, picking up their second win on the young season.
