Team Sopris swim team competes at state championship

The Team Sopris swim team sent 4 state qualifiers to the Colorado State Long Course Championships in Thornton last weekend.

Team members Quinn Macpherson, Aeson Akins, Amy Madsen, and Amelie Ogilby made the trip to Thornton under the guidance of new head coach Abby Hanson. Competing in the state championship, Ogilby set a new team record in the 200-meter backstroke and placed sixth in the state in the event, getting the Barracudas off to a fast start.

Macpherson followed up Ogilby’s sixth-place finish with a 22nd-place finish in the 200-meter fly. Akins also claimed a top 25 finish in the 200-meter backstroke, while Madsen placed ninth in the 1500-meter freestyle, and 11th in the 100-meter breast while also setting a new team record. Madsen also placed fifth in the 200-meter freestyle – moving up from her 35th-place qualifying time, 20th in the 100-meter backstroke, 22nd in the 200-meter backstroke, fifth in the 100-meter freestyle, and fourth in the 50-meter freestyle.

The Barracudas turned in a strong showing in Thornton, representing the Western Slope well against a number of Denver area swimmers.
