By Josh Carney Opening up the home portion of its schedule Tuesday at Coal Ridge High School, the Titans’ boys and girls basketball teams split against the visiting Meeker Cowboys as the girls fell 40-25, while the boys rolled to a 61-20 win in senior Aaron Arreola’s return to the court after more than a year away due to injury.
In the girls game, the Titans struggled to take care of the basketball, and couldn’t hit shots in the 15-point loss. Junior forward Lyanna Nevarez led the Titans with 8 points, while sophomore Taylor Wiescamp and senior Adriana Varges added 6 points each. Senior Kashley Morgan added 3 points, while junior Taylor Roberts added 2 points.
Meeker was led by Julia Dimwiddie, who scored a game-high 13 points, while Gracie Broomfield added 9 points.
“We just couldn’t take care of the ball or hits shot tonight,” said Clyde Morgan, Coal Ridge’s head coach. “I think we learned a lot tonight. We’ll get back in the gym tomorrow and get ready for Thursday.”
In the boys game, the Titans rolled to a 41-point win as senior Kevin DiMarco matched the Cowboys’ point total with 20 points of his own. Coal Ridge led 34-10 at the half before outscoring the Cowboys 27-10 in the second half, holding Meeker scoreless in the third quarter.
Along with DiMarco’s 20 points, junior Austin Gerber scored 8 points, while junior Andrew Herrera and senior Jan Hernandez scored 7 points each.
Coal Ridge sends its boys and girls teams to the Demon Invitational Thursday-Saturday in Glenwood Springs. …read more
