COLBRAN — Since he’s getting older — he turns 46 on Monday — Vail Christian boys basketball coach Sheldon Kuhns’ words carry a bit of wisdom with them.
And one of his favorite expressions is “a road win is always a good win in the 2A Slope.”
There is wisdom in that as the Saints powered past Plateau Valley, 73-68, on Saturday afternoon. Vail Christian overcame a 10-point deficit at the half with a 28-point, third-quarter outburst, as well as a solid defensive effort in the second half to win its league opener.
Alec Moritz went off in a big way with 33 points, including eight 3-pointers, a new school record. It’s very likely that his older brother, Sebastian, could come back from Purdue to try to reclaim his old mark.
Four of those treys came in that explosive third quarter. Meanwhile, Zach McKeever was one assist away from a triple-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds.
Vail Christian (3-4 overall and 1-0 in the Slope) got big offensive contributions from E.J. Koller, Jamison Lee and Tommy O’Neill.
