Need motivation for those New Year’s resolutions? The Vail Recreation District is hosting its first event of 2019 on Jan. 19. The four-race Bloch & Chapleau Vail Grail Winter Race Series kicks off with the Vail Nordic 5K Citizens Race.
Compete in individual races or sign up for all four races to have a shot at winning the coveted Vail Grail, a permanent trophy that will bear the male and female division winner’s names for years to come.
The Vail Nordic 5K Citizens Race takes place at noon on Jan. 19 at Maloit Park in the town of Minturn, immediately following the Battle Mountain High School Nordic race. There will be categories for men’s and women’s skate and classic ski. Cost is $25 preregistered or $35 day-of for adults and $15 preregistered or $25 day-of for students.
An after-party in Minturn with lunch is included. Beer will be provided by Vail Brewing Co. There will be prizes for top finishers and raffle tickets for all participants.
Next up, get out your winter bike and join in the Vail Derail Winter Bike Race on Saturday, Feb. 9, at 4 p.m. at the Vail Nordic Center. After that, snowshoe, skin, spike, hike or Yaktrax up Vail Mountain during the annual Vail Athletic Club Vail Mountain Winter Uphill Race & Hike on Sunday, Feb. 17 at 7 a.m. in Lionshead. Finally, get in the spirit of St. Patrick’s Day with snowshoes or Yaktrax at the Krueger Family Shamrock Shuffle 5K, 10K and Kids Fun Run on Saturday, March 9 at 4 p.m.
Sign-up is available for individual events or the whole series. All Vail Grail events will conclude with an after-party, awards ceremony and raffle for race participants.
