Winter bike to work day Friday in Glenwood Springs

Glenwood Springs plans to celebrate its Winter Bike to Work/Bike to School Day on Friday. Crews will be out greeting and rewarding riders at the Glenwood Springs River Trail, west of Glenwood Springs High School, from 7-8:30 a.m.

Riders stopping at the River Trail location will be treated to free breakfast burritos, Sweet Coloradough doughnuts and hot chocolate.

Free neck gaiters and face masks will also be distributed to riders at some schools.

The local event, hosted by Glenwood Springs Bicycle Advocates, is part of the sixth annual International Bike to Work Day.

The local group says that it is also a reminder that cycling can be a fun and effective means of local travel many days throughout the year.

Organizers encourage riders to make extra preparations for the unique experience of bicycling in winter by dressing in warm layers, protecting hands and face, and riding more slowly and attentively than in warm-weather conditions.

“Cold temperatures and possible slick spots require special care but will make for a bracing and memorable ride,” organizers said in a news release.

Drivers are also encouraged to watch for cyclists on this day and to allow extra space and stopping distance for everyone’s safe passage.
