Alex Gaskarth On Working With Mark Hoppus: “I’m Not Fanboying Out In Front Of Him Anymore”

Simple Creatures is truly an equal partnership.

Simple Creatures talk the beginning of their band and their debut EP ‘Strange Love’ inside the current issue of Rock Sound – and Alex addresses what it’s like working with the frontman of the band he grew up on.

Sharing how his relationship with Mark Hoppus works, Alex Gaskarth shared “I did come up on blink and Mark was very much an inspiration to me, but we’ve had the honeymoon period as it were, become good friends… I’m not fanboying out in front of him anymore, like I used to seven years ago! I don’t think the creative process would be as honest if I was sitting there going, ‘Yeah, whatever you think man, I love you!’ We both keep each other in check, and push each other to do better.”

“Alex grew up playing in blink-182 cover bands, that’s how All Time Low started off, so I didn’t know whether he’d be more deferential to me,” added Mark. “But he’s not at all, he’ll totally stand up for what he thinks is right. It’s a really natural back and forth dynamic. You know, I got into music in the first place because I didn’t grow up playing sports, didn’t like the competitive nature of it. I loved the punk rock community because it was always about helping out other bands. If you were lucky enough to make it, you brought your friends up with you. I see music as this big, open playground where people can be creative with each other.”
