Kelly Clarkson led an all-star ensemble to sing her 2004 hit “Since U Been Gone” for The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Mumford & Sons, Rachel Brosnahan, Shaquille O’Neal, Meghan Trainor, John Oliver, Anthony Anderson, the Roots and Fallon all took turns belting the tune.
Each participant donned headphones and emotively tried their best to take on the challenge of hitting the song’s high notes, resulting in some funny approaches. Shaq shook his head to the melody while earnestly singing his parts, while Oliver mostly screamed the lyrics. Meanwhile, Brosnahan hoisted her finger in the air to try and aid her pitch for one high spot (“Was that it?” she joked after). Fallon took to air guitaring and drumming parts.
Naturally, it was the musicians who fared best at tackling the formidable notes, with the Roots and Mumford & Sons grooving and dancing through some of their sections. However, outside of Kelly Clarkson’s beautiful pitch-perfect takes, Meghan Trainor hit the proper key throughout her section.
Clarkson will be appearing in another all-star ensemble on January 13th at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, California as part of a tribute concert honoring Aretha Franklin, which will be filmed and will air as a TV special on CBS later this year. Aretha! A Grammy Celebration for the Queen of Soul also features Janelle Monáe, John Legend, Celine Dion, Alessia Cara and Patti LaBelle.
