Rising R&B star H.E.R. followed her breakout performance at the Grammys with a joyful rendition of “As I Am” on Ellen Tuesday. The musician breezed through the cut with an effortless cool. Donning her signature reflective sunglasses, H.E.R. strummed the song’s dreamy guitar chords, grooved alongside her back-up dancers and beautifully crooned the track’s clever hook, “You know I’m the best, I am/Be a fool to not take me as I am.”
“As I Am” is the final track on H.E.R.’s EP, I Used to Know Her: The Prelude, which arrived last August. On Sunday, H.E.R. not only performed at the Grammys, but picked up a pair of trophies as well: Best R&B album for her self-titled debut and Best R&B Performance for “Best Part,” featuring Daniel Caesar.
Pegged as a child prodigy, H.E.R. got her start in music as a pre-teen and even had a handful of television performances under her belt by the time she signed to RCA. Since joining the label, she’s chosen to release music exclusively under the H.E.R. moniker, while declining to speak directly about her identity and keeping her eyes covered in sunglasses at all times.
