Yellowcard Are Suing Juice WRLD For $15 Million

There’s a place off Ocean Avenue, where you used to sit and plagiarise our songs.

Yellowcard are suing Juice WRLD for $15 million USD, claiming that his track ‘Lucid Dreams’ has plagiarised their track ‘Holly Wood Died’ off their 2005 album ‘Lights And Sounds’.

The band reportedly filed the paperwork in a Californian court yesterday (Monday, October 21), claiming that ‘Lucid Dreams’ has taken “melodic elements” from their 2005 track.

Yellowcard are suing for damages in excess of $15 million and a “running royalty and/or ownership share” on future exploitations of ‘Lucid Dreams’, alternatively they’re seeking statutory damages “for each act of copyright infringement” and for Juice WRLD to be “permanently enjoined” from exploiting ‘Lucid Dreams’ in the future.

The band are also claiming that in addition to recording revenue and royalties, they are owed damages from Juice WRLD’s touring and other live appearances given the “overwhelming success” of the track, which launched the rapper’s career and provided him “substantial opportunities to tour and perform around the world.”

But that’s not all – in the complaint, the band also highlight a link between Juice WRLD and Yellowcard, citing that the rapper has expressed appreciation for “emo pop rock” in several interviews. Juice WRLD has at various points been quoted saying that he has “listened to and educated himself in Emo pop rock music” in order to impress a girl he had a crush on in the fifth grade. Yellowcard go even further, highlighting that the 20-year-old rapper would have been in the fifth grade in 2006 – the year that ‘Holly Wood Died’ was released on their Gold certified album ‘Lights And Sounds’. Woah.

For context – this is Juice WRLD’s ‘Lucid Dreams’:
