We caught up with Yungblud on his Rock Sound covershoot to talk through his influences, and what inspires his music now.

He shared that he grew up on a diet of My Chemical Romance, saying “I grew up on rock and roll like My Chemical Romance, who were actually genuinely talking about and saying things.”

He continued “But to me that’s actually coming from the hip-hop community right now. Like Lil Peep before he went- he was talking about anxiety and things that people actually relate to.”

It’s these inspirations that have made Yungblud such a force to be reckoned with, both musically and lyrically. His music deals with important political and social themes- but he doesn’t want to be preachy, sharing “I don’t want to preach to anyone, because if someone preaches to me I just turn off- I’ve been preached to my whole life. I just want to say what I think and encourage others to say what they think. That’s how we change shit.”

And he’s well on his way to changing shit.
