There’s a lot to love about living in the mountains, but the low oxygen concentration and potential for altitude sickness isn’t a reason that comes to mind. However, a new service offered by A La Mode salon hopes to make that an issue of the past.

Set up in its new location on Agate Avenue in Granby, A La Mode recently introduced an oxygen bar, among other new services, in an effort to provide clients even more ways to relax and refresh themselves.

“It’s exciting to be able to provide this service, especially on this end of the county, where it’s never been available,” said Melissa Robles, owner of A La Mode.

Unlike the clunky canister of oxygen available for purchase at a store, the oxygen bar allows users to sit and enjoy the experience while they breathe deeply through a personal nose cannula.

The oxygen bar system turns purified water into more concentrated oxygen, which Robles said can not only help fight altitude sickness, but also can help relieve stress and improve energy. At the moment, the salon is not offering scented oxygen.

Clients can pay by the minute or for 10, 20 or 30 minute sessions.

“I did it for just a few minutes, but I did have a headache when I started and it alleviated some of that and … it’s definitely calming,” said Paige Bronk, stylist at the salon.

Another new service A La Mode now offers is an ionic foot detox that purifies the body. The process uses cycles of positive and negative ions to pull toxins out through the feet while they are soaking in water.

The detox is recommended twice a week for four weeks with a three to six month break before starting over again. Robles explained that she did a ton of research on the detox process before offering it.

“Chiropractors use it a lot because it helps detox your joints and your body,” she said.

Since she started offering the service, she said clients with joint problems or frequent smokers in particular have noticed the effects of the detox most acutely, but even health nuts may benefit from the 30 minute process.

“If you’re struggling with anything in your health, this definitely makes a difference,” Robles said. “No matter what, with what we breathe and what we touch, we’re getting toxins in our body all the time.”

Aside from the more unique offerings available at A La Mode, the salon also expanded waxing services and now offers eyelash extensions. Regular clients can rejoice, though, since standard services including manicures, pedicures and hair care all remain available at the new location.

Robles moved A La Mode to its current storefront in June after she and her husband remodeled the whole building. Prior to opening in the new space, A La Mode operated in Granby since 2003.
