With up to three feet of snow forecast to fall in Grand County between now and Friday, the Colorado Department of Transportation is warning drivers to prepare for road closures.
On Thursday, CDOT announced there will be extended closures on highways in the mountains for avalanche mitigation Friday morning, potentially throughout the day.
While it is unclear when and where exactly will need avalanche mitigation on Friday, CDOT expects Interstate 70 to be affected along with several other highways. CDOT also warns drivers not to rely on CO Highway 9 or 285 because of the poor road conditions expected.
Icy roads and blowing snow have already led to a few car wrecks in Grand County. According to the Grand County Office of Emergency Management, there has been a slide-off at Red Dirt Hill on US Highway 40 and a rollover on 40 outside Kremmling so far today.
CDOT notes that drivers should be aware of chain and traction laws, as well as be prepared for winter delays with water, blankets, a first-aid kit and food.
