The Grand County Coroner’s Office has identified the man killed in a high-speed car wreck Friday night in Grand County as Freddie Ray Carillo, 49, of Grand Lake.

Based on information released by Colorado State Patrol, Carillo caused the two-vehicle collision on US Highway 40 about eight miles east of Granby at 11 p.m. Friday.

CSP reported that the wreck happened after a Grand County Deputy saw Carillo driving a black Range Rover at a high speed and activated the patrol car’s emergency lights to stop the speeding SUV.

At that point, Carillo allegedly accelerated to over 100 mph, and the deputy lost sight of the SUV. A short time later, the deputy was searching for the Range Rover and saw debris on the highway.

Authorities soon located two vehicles involved in the crash, as both automobiles had gone far off the side of the road in an area that was dark and unlit.

According to CSP, an investigation later revealed that the black Range Rover caused the wreck when Carillo hit a red Subaru Outback inside the westbound lanes.

Carillo was found dead at the scene, and the driver of the Subaru was flown to St. Anthony Hospital in Denver with serious injuries, though the individual was not in critical condition.

US 40 remained closed for about two hours before the crash scene was documented and a cone pattern allowed both directions of travel to resume in the eastbound lanes.

The crash remains under investigation by Colorado State Patrol. Speed, impairment, reckless driving and attempting to elude law enforcement are all suspected factors in the collision.
