A Grand Lake man involved in a burglary ring has been sentenced to a year in jail and must pay over $1,000 in fines and court costs after pleading guilty to stealing rare coins in another theft case.
Grand County Court Judge Nicholas Catanzarite sentenced Paul Asbury, 47, to a year in jail for a misdemeanor count of theft between $750 to $2,000 on Aug. 6. Asbury also has to pay $1,081 in fines and court costs.
Additionally, prosecutors have 91 days from the date of Asbury’s sentencing to determine what amount, if any, he will be required to repay in restitution.
In June, Asbury was arrested on charges relating to the theft of a rare coin collection from the Gateway Inn in Grand Lake after eyewitnesses told police Asbury had the coins. A search of his home found items matching the description of those stolen totaling over $100,000, according to the arrest warrant.
Because Asbury pleaded guilty to 12 misdemeanor counts of theft for his involvement in the Grand Lake burglary ring in May, the plea deal worked out by his legal counsel and representatives from the 14th Judicial District Attorney’s Office was nullified by his new crime.
That deal gave Asbury three years of unsupervised probation and 120 hours of useful public service, as well as required him to undergo a mental health and substance abuse evaluation. Asbury admitted to violating his probation and self-revoked, according to court documents.
Judge Catanzarite sentenced Asbury to 312 days in jail for violating his probation, which he will serve concurrently with his other sentence. Asbury also owes almost $2,900 for his involvement in the burglary ring.
