In the schools: Hats off to our high school mentors

Great Happenings in East Grand schools the week of Oct. 25.

• A big thanks from our teachers to our PAC’s for providing the wonderful dinners during parent teacher conferences and everything else you do.

• The MPHS boy’s soccer team is 11-3, so be on the lookout next week, as they might get to host the first game of the state tournament. If they host, it will be the first time in boys soccer history that they get to host a state tournament game. If they host, the game will be Oct. 31.

• The Middle Park Mountain Bike team had 17 riders participate in the state championship in Durango, including senior Kimo Sullivan, who was racing in his final Colorado High School Cycling League race and has raced in the league for four years. Also, Middle Park Mountain Bike took home the All Star Team Award for the North Conference. This is given to the team that displays exceptional leadership, sportsmanship, a commitment to their coaches, athletes, volunteers and community, and consistently goes above and beyond assisting with race production.

• High school technology students had to design a flyer for a teacher representing something that teacher does. The following students’ posters were chosen to be printed: Keelan Thomas for Monica McFarlin, Hope Newcomer Neeson for Sam Crane, and Sarah Periolat for Sarah Boles.

• This week in eighth grade social studies we have been preparing our mock trial, the culminating project for our law unit. Students worked to prepare for a murder case, and all students will have a role to play in our “courtroom.” Student jurors will determine the defendant’s guilt based on evidence.

• MPHS theatre students are gearing up for their production of “Fiddler on the Roof” with tech rehearsals next week. They have been working incredibly hard learning lines, music and choreography as well as doing lighting design, set construction, costumes and all other technical aspects of the show.

• Students at the Fraser Valley Elementary School created book character pumpkins for the annual challenge. Students were able to pick their book and highlight a character by painting, attaching props, and otherwise transforming their pumpkins. The entries are colorful, unique, and reflect the reading culture at FVE.

• This week high school student-athletes mentored GES students in their PE classes. The student-athletes connected with GES students by playing games, encouraging and sharing advice. The high schoolers were truly inspirational and excellent role models for the younger students. Thank you MPHS Panthers Cameron Conger, Robert Graham, Holly Harms, Mia Kaplanis, Katie Mackendrick, Dominyka Reventaite and Jaime Rios for your positive leadership. It’s so heartwarming to see our community coming together to support the development of our children.
