Birk Irving, the 20-year-old Winter Park native who’s become one of the top freestyle skiers in world, is starting the season strong.
Irving began the 2019-20 ski season with his first FIS World Cup victory at the New Zealand Winter Games, after ending last season with his first podium finish at Mammoth Mountain Ski Area in California.
It’s a momentum Irving hopes continues throughout the season.
“I definitely just want to keep up with what I’ve been doing,” he said over the phone Friday.
Irving plans to spend November competing in Austria before coming back to Colorado this December, when he will compete in another FIS World Cup event at Copper Mountain Resort early in the month. Depending on those results, he might go on to compete in China.
After that, Irving expects to be at the X Games in Aspen.
He summarized the season as a lot of competing and training. Outside of the competitions, he’s trying to film a mini movie throughout Colorado, and he’s hoping to get into the backcountry as well.
Irving said his biggest goal for the season is to make the podium at the X Games or the Dew Tour, but enjoying the sport is just as important to him.
“Keep the results coming and keep having fun skiing,” Irving said of his goals for the season.
