Keyser Creek Fire mostly contained; Morgan Gulch Trail remains closed

A small wildfire 9 miles southeast of Parshall is 95% contained.

The Keyser Creek Fire, as it was named by the US Forest Service, was reported to Grand County on Nov. 15. Firefighters detected no fire activity in the area after significant snowfall and rain on the 5 acres, according to the US Forest Service.

The fire has been put in “patrol status,” meaning firefighters from the Sulphur Ranger District will routinely check the fire and surrounding area to ensure it has not rekindled.

The Morgan Gulch Trail remains closed until further notice because of the burned snags that pose a risk to visitors.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. The fire burned grass, brush and beetle-killed lodgepole pine forests along Morgan Gulch, a remote area of the Arapho National Forest.

Crews elected an indirect approach due to the location of the fire. The fire was surrounded by snow and did not threaten any structures or resource values.
