Middle Park boys 2nd in Nordic opener; girls take 3rd

Anchored by strong finishes from Sebastian Brower, Alex Holinka and Kimo Sullivan, the Middle Park boys finished second behind Aspen in the Nordic ski team’s first meet of the season Saturday at Spring Gulch near Carbondale.

The girls team took third with strong skiing from Sylvia Brower, Elizabeth Hammond and Maggie Barker. The race was in the classic technique.

Despite cold temperatures and a tough five-kilometer course, Sebastian Brower took third behind Sumner Cotton of Steamboat Springs High School and Taiga Moore from Aspen in the boys race. Sebastian Brower’s time of 18 minutes, 9 seconds was only 20 seconds behind the race winner.

Also, Alex Holinka finished in eighth place, skiing the course in 19:05 while Kimo Sullivan was 12th in 19:35. Other finishers for the Panthers included Grayson Barker (20th, 20:21); Graydon Walker (22nd, 20:25); Ethan Callarman (23rd, 20:25); Vinny Troccoli (24th, 20:29); Will Kuhns (51st, 23:26); Andy Troccoli (69th, 24:23); Chance Hein (70th, 24:28); Kyle Vogelbacher (78th, 24:53); Calvin Ciccarelli (81st, 25); Ewan Gallagher (89th, 25:36); and Jack Nesvara (145th, 38:15). The race featured 148 skiers.

Meanwhile, Sylvia Brower led the Panther girls to a third place finish behind Aspen and Battle Mountain. She took sixth place overall in 21:52, followed by Elizabeth Hammond in 17th place with a time of 24:02 and Maggie Barker in 27th place at 25:31.

Other finishers were Gabrielle Pellini (29th, 25:35); Ellen Osborne (44th, 27:51); Selena Stoncius (47th, 28:62); Emily DePlata (58th, 30:09); and Sierra Jamison (62nd, 30:43).

A total of 121 girls skied in the event.

Middle school finishes 3rd, 5th to start season

The East Grand Middle School Nordic ski team’s boys finished third and girls fifth at the first meet of the season Saturday at Spring Gulch near Carbondale.

The top skier for the girls was Annie Kuhns with a 10th place finish and a time of 13 minutes, 46 seconds on the three kilometer course, skied in the classic technique. Other skiers for the girls were Anna Lantermans (25th, 15:48), Haley Miller (29th, 16:18), Lena Moss (34th, 18:21) and Sabra Forquer (36th, 19:38).

The top skier for the boys was Dane Jensen in seventh place at 11:55. Other East Grand skiers in the race were David Hammond (16th, 13:14); Carter Chamberlain (22nd, 14:04); Colvin Villup (47th; 18:06); Barrett Acker (49th, 20:09) and Franklin Stine (51st, 22:30).

Adrien Brower of Granby Elementary School, skiing as an independent for East Grand, was 31st with a time of 15:16. A total of 52 boys competed.
