US Highway 40 is currently closed near Tabernash following a fatal head on collision that happened shortly before 6 p.m. on Tuesday.
Details on the incident are still developing but according to local law enforcement at approximately 5:45 p.m. multiple vehicles were involved in a head on collision near mile post 221, west of Tabernash near the entrance to Winter Park Highlands. Authorities confirmed one fatality as of 6 p.m. with at least one other patient in critical condition.
Lt. Dan Mayer, spokesman for the Grand County Sheriff’s Office, said US 40 was closed between Grand County Road 5 and Grand County Road 5221. Detours are in place and traffic is being diverted around the site of the collision. Mayer estimated the closure of US 40 would last at least two hours.
