Mustangs out of state tournament following victories over Del Norte, Delores

West Grand’s run in the Class 2A state volleyball tournament ended Friday with a three set loss to Simla at the Denver Coliseum.

In the tournament, West Grand defeated Del Norte on Thursday and Delores on Friday, each time rallying to victory in five sets.

Against Del Norte, West Grand fell behind 2-0 before winning the final three sets. Against Delores, the Mustangs were down 2-1 before coming back and taking the last two.

West Grand came into the tourney seeded No. 7. The Mustangs fell to No. 2 Limon in four sets on Thursday.

The tournament was double elimination until Saturday’s semifinal round, when it becomes a single elimination bracket.

Limon remains perfect in the tournament following a first round bye and a win vs. Meeker after Limon’s match with the Mustangs.

Six teams remain in the tournament. They are all the top six seeds. No. 1 Denver Christian also remains unbeaten.

On Saturday, the winners of Meeker vs. Wiggins and Simla vs. Union Colony will move on to face the tournament’s two unbeaten squads before the championship match.
