Mustangs volleyball to host regional tourney Friday

After a stellar regular season, the West Grand volleyball team is preparing to host the regional tournament Friday in Kremmling.

The Mustangs finished regular season play with a 17-2 record and the No. 7 seed going into the postseason. However, the team has not yet faced Ignacio or Highland, both of which West Grand is set to match up with Friday.

West Grand is scheduled to start play at 11 a.m. Friday at WGHS, and Coach Scott Terryberry expects the competition to be stiff.

“Highland plays in a tough league … so I expect them to be a decent team,” he said, adding that Ignacio looks stout, too.

Also, the Mustangs are in somewhat unfamiliar territory with this being the first time the girls on the team have hosted the regional tourney. They are coming off a number of strong victories, but those were not without close calls, including five-set decisions over Soroco and Paonia in late October.

Terryberry said his team might have been suffering from nerves and fatigue in some of the recent matches that went five sets, but he credited his team for continuing to find ways to win nevertheless.

“They just keep finding a way to do it,” he said of the team, adding that in one of those matches, the Mustangs were down 13-11 in the fifth set before scoring the last four points to win 15-13.

West Grand should have a slight advantage with the regional tournament in Kremmling, as the team has had extremely strong support at home this year.
