Why does our DMV (Hot Sulphur Springs) charge a fee for paying your registration renewals with a credit card?
The website is extremely misleading and does not disclose this fee until the very end of the transaction, in addition it is also not disclosed on the mailed bill (white card).
After calling the DMV to dispute this charge, I was informed by Grand County Clerk and Recorder Sara Rosen that Colorado had a contract/ agreement with Visa/MasterCard that they are “not allowed” as part of that “contract” to disclose those fees up front.
My concern is that this is extortion, why on earth has no one renegotiated this so called contract. Are elected officials there to be our advocate, or simply there advocating the status quo?
I see absolutely no reason why this fee is not disclosed up front. At the very minimum put it in the white cards.
By the way, Denver did away with the credit card fee January 2015.
Come on Grand County elected officials, do your job.
