Police cited a Fraser woman for careless driving causing injury after she hit a wheelchair user crossing the sidewalk in Winter Park.
At around 6 p.m. on New Year’s Eve, a pedestrian in a wheelchair and another person were crossing Main Street at Telemark Drive when a brown Acura stopped in the right-hand lane proceeded into the intersection, colliding with the pedestrian in the wheelchair, Fraser Winter Park Police said.
According to witnesses, the pedestrians were unable to make it to the other side of the street before the signal on Main Street turned green.
The collision caused the pedestrian, a 34-year-old man from Thousand Oaks, California, to be ejected from his wheelchair and suffer a hip injury. The wheelchair was also damaged.
The pedestrian was transported to Middle Park Health – Granby and treated for minor injuries, according to police.
The driver of the Acura, a 34-year-old Fraser woman, received a summons in the Grand County Court for careless driving. Impairment was not a suspected factor, but police believe driver distraction was.
Fraser Winter Park Police, Grand County EMS and East Grand Fire responded to the call.
