Police blotter Sept. 4-10: Investigation reveals ‘human scalp’ was actually animal’s hide

Editor’s note: We’ve made a few changes at the Sky-Hi News over the last couple months, but not running the regular police blotter was never supposed to be one of them. Rather, the blotter took a short hiatus in August with the Grand County Sheriff’s Office adjusting how much information it releases in the call logs.

Sitting down with Sheriff Brett Schroetlin last week, he explained the change was a result of a few concerns, including inaccuracies and the amount of time it takes to compile the full logs. While the reported call logs were accurate, many times a call was far different from what first-responders experienced when they arrived on scene.

After sitting down with the Sky-Hi News, Schroetlin has agreed to help us produce the log again in a way that we both hope will satisfy some of these issues.

Wednesday, Sept. 4

3:14 p.m. — A woman told dispatch her dog had retrieved what she thought might be a human scalp. An investigation revealed it was actually the hair and hide of an animal.

8:48 p.m. — Kremmling police responded to a call about a driver failing to stay in one lane. Upon stopping the vehicle, officers discovered the individual was not from the area and afraid of the curves in the road.

Sunday, Sept. 8

4:38 p.m. — The Grand County Sheriff’s office responded to a second-hand report of people stranded on an island in Shadow Mountain Lake with moose in the area. All of the people were safely on shore within an hour.

3:34 p.m. — A bag containing syringes and firearms was discovered in the employees area at a Winter Park business.

Tuesday, Sept. 10

6:09 p.m. — A woman with warrants out of Maryland contacted Fraser Winter Park police to turn herself in.

These are just a small number of the calls fielded by Grand County’s dispatchers, first-responders and law enforcement agencies. The police blotter was put together by the Sky-Hi News in conjunction with the Grand County Sheriff’s Office. It does not include any reports about alleged sexual assaults, child abuse, DUIs or domestic violence.
