A 25-year-old man is in police custody following a Sunday chase on Highway US 40 that ended north of Kremmling in Grand County.
In a news release, Colorado State Patrol describes how its troopers helped Steamboat Springs police and the U.S. Forest Service stop a fleeing 2007 Nissan Xterra at about 12:20 p.m. Sunday.
The release says the SUV was reported stolen earlier in the day out of Craig, and Steamboat police officers tried stopping the stolen SUV in Routt County, but the driver sped away.
Steamboat police abandoned the chase at milepost 152, while the US Forest Service continued the pursuit. The chase ended not too far down the highway, when a CSP trooper set up “stop sticks” near milepost 164 and flattened all four of the SUV’s tires.
The release says that the Xterra then drove into the ditch and stopped within a half-mile, at which point the driver ditched the SUV and ran up a mountainside into some trees.
More CSP troopers arrived on scene about a minute later and a search ensued. The driver was soon found hiding in a tree and taken into custody without further incident, according to CSP.
The driver has been identified as Kyle Neighbors, 25, of Craig.
Grand County EMS took him to the UC Health Yampa Valley Medical Center for evaluation of unrelated medical issues. Neighbors was then booked into the Rout County Jail on the charges related to the pursuit.
