Sheriff’s office warns of phone scam

The Grand County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about scam calls that are spoofing its fax number to attempt to get personal information.

On Tuesday morning, the sheriff’s office posted a warning message to its Facebook encouraging people not to share any information, especially via email.

The scam mirrors the sheriff’s office fax number, 970-725-3227, and asks for personal information. According to Sheriff Brett Schroetlin, one report about the scam was made to the Fraser Winter Park Police Department on Monday and his office has received a couple comments about the scam.

Schroetlin said the sheriff’s office never conducts random calls.

“Unless we are actively working a case with them and have already developed a rapport with somebody then we might call,” he explained.

Commonly, scammers will ask the person on the line to email them information to an unidentifiable address or to call them back on a different number.

Schroetlin recommended residents call the sheriff’s office business line, 970-726-3343, to verify any requests for information.

“What tends to happen is a lot of people don’t actually call us to confirm, they just assume it was legit,” he said.
