On a dark stage, an anonymous man described the lost art of musical theater. The lights came up and revealed a beautifully designed set, filled with musical memorabilia, an elderly man and a record player to start a zany and hilarious musical.
Middle Park High School’s next theater production, “The Drowsy Chaperone” opens 7:30 p.m. Thursday and continues with performances 7:30 p.m. Friday, 1 p.m. Saturday and 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the school.
The meta-musical starts with the man on stage, played by Aidan Carver, who puts on his favorite record: the cast recording of a fictitious 1928 musical. As the man watches, the record comes to life with two lovers on the eve of their wedding, a bumbling best man, a desperate theater producer, a non-so-bright hostess, two gangsters posing as pastry chefs, a misguided Don Juan and an intoxicated chaperone.
Throughout the show, the comedic musical pokes fun at all the tropes that characterize the musical theater genre.
Tickets will be available at the door and are $10 for adults, $4 for youth and free for East Grand students and staff.
