West Grand volleyball whips Moffat County for 2nd victory in two weeks

The Moffat County Bulldogs came out with a high tempo offense and hard serves during a volleyball match against West Grand on Tuesday.

As a result, the Mustangs found themselves down 7-3 in the first set before the team responded with intensity and teamwork to record their second four-set victory in as many weeks.

“This was a great win for us,” Coach Kim Bodemann said as she reported the game results via email. “We gained some confidence and our serve receive was much better. The girls were absorbing the hard serving of some of the Moffat players. This is a good match to continue to build off.”

Throughout the contest, the Mustangs played with confidence, made great diving saves, put up strong blocks and finished plays, the coach said. But there’s still room to grow, as the Bulldogs kicked it up a notch on the Mustangs in the second set and took advantage of missed serves to keep from getting shutout.

“We need to eliminate our unforced errors,” Bodemann said.

During the match, West Grand senior Emma DeSanti had nine kills, 12 assists and four blocks. She was followed in kills by sophomores Alex Schake with eight and Maddy Probst with seven.

Additionally, senior Mikayla Shearer logged six kills and four blocks while junior Josy Wheatley led the Mustangs in assists with 16. Also, freshman Sage Lechman served 16 times and was 100% from the service line.

The support that came from the crowd was awesome too, Bodemann added.

The victory comes on the heels of the Mustangs’ Aug. 27 victory over North Park at home, which the Mustangs also won in four sets.

“I’m very pleased to how they responded coming out of a long weekend, showing lots of grit and desire,” Coach Scott Terryberry said of the team.

The Mustangs will play host to the West Grand Volleyball Tournament on Friday and Saturday, featuring Meeker, Calhan, Clear Creek, Peyton, Gilpin County, Cedaredge and Sanford, along with West Grand.

The Mustangs start tournament play against Gilpin County at noon Friday. Their next scheduled match will be against Sanford at 3 p.m. Friday.  On Saturday, the Mustangs start at 9 a.m. against Cedaredge.

West Grand’s final game time will be determined by how they finish in their pool.
