Grand County’s chilly mornings could portend some early season snowfall on Thursday.
The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for Grand County through Wednesday afternoon due to heightened fire conditions, but temperatures should cool down later in the week.
A winter storm is expected to hit Colorado late Wednesday and coincide with the jet stream, an area of fast-moving air, to produce snow, according to OpenSnow.com.
Temperatures are expected to drop Wednesday evening with snow possible Wednesday through Friday, according to the NWS. Friday morning is forecast to bring a hard freeze.
Based on OpenSnow’s models, snow accumulations could range from 2-10 inches with the most significant snowfall in the mountains. Additionally, OpenSnow is predicting that Winter Park Resort will get about 8 inches between Wednesday and Thursday.
Last year, Winter Park’s first snow fell Oct. 8. If predictions come true, this year’s snow could be only days behind. In early September, the resort saw mixed precipitation.
However, the winter conditions won’t linger for long, as OpenSnow is predicting warmer temperatures this weekend and early next week.
Ultimately, the Old Farmer’s Almanac predicts this season will see some deep powder and cold temperatures regionally.
