Most people remember Klaus for his skiing and ski wear exploits. While I also remember many of these, my favorite memory is windsurfing with Klaus. Windsurfing at Ruedi used to be very popular every weekend back in the ‘80s and ‘90s and Klaus was a fixture on Freeman Mesa.
He was always happy and jovial and typically the last one out of the water. One afternoon as the wind whipped up and it became cloudy and cold, I put on my wet suit and went our for another set. Klaus and I were the last ones sailing as the sun set. I was shivering and determined to outlast him. He was in swim trunks and yodeling all the while. As I sat in my towel, he landed, and with a huge smile he said, “Being out here the longest makes us look very intelligent.”
